Dawson, Simon James: 1820-1902. Civil engineer; appointed to survey the country west of Lake Superior, 1857; employed in the opening up of the Dawson Route, 1868; superintended transportation of troops in Red River expedition, 1870 (Wallace, Dictionary of Canadian biography). // At head of title: "31 Victoria. Sessional paper (no. 81)." Also published, Ottawa: Printed by I.B. Taylor, 1869 (32p.). Discusses various routes, types of transportation, costs, and probable volume of freight. Proposed a railway to Height of Land, the use of navigable streams to Lake of the Woods, and another railway to Fort Garry. A wagon road was to be a preliminary step. For French version see Peel 480.
